More than 356,000 victims experience out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest annually, in the U.S. alone. Nearly 90% of these victims fail to survive.
Ninety-four percent of sudden cardiac arrests in adults is due to a condition known as ventricular fibrillation (VF). VF is an emergency that requires immediate medical attention. Emergency treatment for ventricular fibrillation includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and shocks to the heart with a device called an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Average arrival time for EMS across the U.S. remains seven minutes. A victim's chance of survival decreases by 7-10% for each minute defibrillation by an AED is delayed, thus once EMS arrives on scene, the victim's chance of survival is reduced by 70-100%.
